Akihabara is well known as Akihabara Electric Town, because hundreds of electronics stores line the neighborhood streets, selling everything from small electrical parts to large home appliances. In recent years, Akihabara has become famous as a place where anime and manga fanatics gather dressed in costumes of their favorite anime or manga characters to show them off.
There is no ward or city called Akihabara. Akihabara refers to the area surrounding JR Akihabara station which is located in central Tokyo, not so far from the Imperial Palace.
